This short article ran in SBC Surf's summer 2012 issue. It focuses on the 7 students building their own cedar SUP boards. What is so cool about this is that prior to meeting Raph Bruhwiler at the launch of their boards in Hakai, they had only seen him in this very magazine. They were mightily impressed that he was featured in the magazines. "He must be a real pro," was a comment one student made. Well, now they themselves are all pros by that definition! We are pretty sure you will think so to after you meet them in the film.

Look out for a full feature on the making of STAND in the next issue of SBC Surf.

A Hundred Year Storm- Powder Mag Latitude
Last March I travelled to Eastern Europe with Jordan Manley, Forrest Coots and Chad Sayers in the hope of skiing some of the snow that fell across vast swathes of the continent. The storm eventually became a state of emergency and what we encountered was part of the aftermath- a little less violent, but equally as insightful. I joined the crew as a writer and the story was published in Powder Magazine.
Sacred Headwaters Article- Coast Mountain Culture
Earlier this year I was approached by the editor of Coast Mountain Culture (CMC) to write a piece on the threats of mining facing the Sacred Headwaters region in Northern British Columbia. The issue is largely a sister issue to the proposed pipeline and tanker route through the Great Bear Rainforest which the film, STAND, I am currently making is focused on. Given the opportunity to research and write about an important issue for one of my favorite magazines, I jumped at the assignment. CMC is a new publication launched on the back of Kooteney Mountain Culture which has been getting people stoked for free for a decade.
The piece was to be framed by it's most public defender, Wade Davis. Davis' resume reads like the lives work of a dozen genius' and he is a National Geographic Explorer in Residence. The opportunity to chat with Davis and learn more about his work gave the assignment that much more appeal.
The article was complemented by the photography of the incredibly talented Jordan Manley and captures the raw beauty of the region and stoic characters like Ray Collingwood that live there and are working to protect it.
You can find the magazine in most good outdoor stores in the Pacific Northwest or read the article in it's entirety here.
The Ski Journal- Kashmir History
I wrote this peice for The Ski Journal. It looks at the long history of skiing in Gulmarg dating back to the 1920's. It was great to dig deep and speak with charasmatic legends like Sylvain Saudan, while integrating my own contemporary experiences with characters like Billa Bakshi.
Aka Skidor- Kashmir Article
If you are Swedish or read Swedish, check out the latest copy on the shelves of Aka Skidor, the Swedish ski magazine. The article is based on the Salomon Freeski TV. I was fortunate enough to do with photographer Blake Jorgenson, Chris Rubens and Tristan Knoertzer. We had an awesome trip exploring the new heli ski terrain with Gulmarg Heliski.
I also called in to the Salomon studio last week and got a sneak peak of the Freeski TV episode we filmed. I think you will all be stoked so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the trailer here.
Outer Edge Magazine Article
I was fortunate enough to return to Gulmarg this winter with Salomon Freeski TV to film. I was joined by photographer Blake Jorgenson, Chris Rubens and Tristan Knoertzer. We had an awesome trip exploring the new heli ski terrain with Gulmarg Heliski. Look out for the issue on shelves in Australia.
CAC Avalanche Bulletin iPhone App
I finally came around to it. Actually, to be truthful, my contract finally expired and allowed me to get into an iPhone. Loading it up with apps and stuff I may or may not occasionally use, I stumbled across the Canadian Avalanche Center Bulletin App. As I loaded it up there was an image that Jordan Manley shot of me skiing up the Duffy on the Coast.
Sweet. And not a bad app either.

Haglofs Catalog
I just got a copy of the new Haglofs winter catalog with a collage of my photos from Kashmir this February. There are a few shots of Ptor's in the mix also. Many of the shots were taken on our base camp trip into Aru, a remote village in Kashmir. Our crew consisted of Haglofs creative director, Roddy Darcy, Haglofs athlete and globe trotter Ptor Spricenieks, their wives Katelijne and Karin, Steve and myself. Very stoked on the outcome.
Haglofs is a Swedish outdoor company making extremely nice outerwear, sleeping bags, packs and a myriad of other products. Check out their webite at www.haglofs.com
Published in the Swedish Ski Magazine Aka Skidor
I learnt today that a photo Jordan Manley shot of me skiing up the Duffey two winters ago was published in a Swedish ski magazine Aka Skidor. The full page shot on the right side is yours truely.
This was an amazing day of skiing where we simply went exploring above and around the Anniversary Glacier. We spent a night at Keiths Hut and ski toured both days finding some incredible snow and magic light. This was on of my favorite ski trips that season.
Quoted in Mens Journal Resort Guide
In August 2008 I spent some time in Revelstoke researching the history of skiing in Revelstoke leading up to the development of the new ski hill. In town at the time was a writer from Mens Journal and I landed a quote in her resort review of revelstoke. I just stumbled upon an online version of the article.
My First Cover
So I got my first cover. While I was home in Australia my mum hosted a cutting horse charity cutting to raise money for the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation raises money and awareness for training and placing breasrt cancer nurses. The event was called the Pink Cutting and was an all women's competition. 36 women competed and everyone got involved in the spirit of the event.By the end of the weekend they had raised over $10,000 dollars through sponsors, donations and a cocktail party and charity auction.
I donated my services to shoot photos of the event and landed this cover shot of Performance Horse Magazine. Not a bad reward. It isn't a skiing or climbing magazine, but it's a cover none the less.
If you are wondering what the sport of cutting is all about, check out the video here
Iceland Article in SBC Skier
I finally laid eyes on my Iceland article and photos in the final issue of SBC Skier. The magazine hit the stands while I was away in India so only now have I been able to see it in hard copy and I am stoked. Grab a copy if you see it on the stand somewhere in Canada and let me know what you think.
